PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide isoprene compositions free of C5 hydrocarbons under decoupling conditions and/or safe operating conditions, and methods of producing the same.SOLUTION: A method of producing isoprene comprises: culturing recombinant cells including a heterologous nucleic acid encoding an isoprene synthase polypeptide under culture conditions suitable for isoprene production; and producing isoprene in a gas phase including more than about 9.5% (volume) oxygen, where the concentration of isoprene is less than the lower flammability limit 1.5 vol.% or greater than the upper flammability limit 12.0 vol.% and the cells produce more than 400 nmole/g/hr of isoprene.
