The present invention is a negative electrode material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which comprises negative electrode active material particles, and which is characterized in that: the negative electrode active material particles comprise a silicon compound represented by SiOx (0.5 ≤ x ≤ 1.6); the silicon compound contains an Li compound on the surface or inside; and each negative electrode active material particle has a coating film layer that covers the surface of the silicon compound and is formed of an organic polymer. Consequently, there is provided a negative electrode material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which is capable of increasing the battery capacity and improving the cycle characteristics and the initial efficiency of a battery. |
