A process for preparing a hydrocarbon-based polymer comprising an end group comprising a 2-oxo-1,3-dioxolane-4-yl ending, by ring opening by metathesis in the presence of a metathesis catalyst, of a chain-transfer agent comprising a carbonate ring and of a compound having a formula comprising at least one C6-C16 ring with a carbon-carbon double bond. A hydrocarbon-based polymer which can be obtained by means of this process. The use of this polymer as an adhesion promoter or plasticizer which is reacted in an adhesive composition.
