PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for removing, from mammalian blood, pathogens or toxins derived from the pathogens selected from the group consisting of Bacillus anthracis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus.SOLUTION: The invention provides a method comprising the steps of: contacting a blood sample with a carbohydrate, such as a heparin, which has a binding affinity for a pathogen or toxin, and is immobilized on a solid substrate under conditions allowing the binding of the solid substrate to the pathogen or toxin in the blood sample; and separating the sample from the substrate, so that the pathogen or toxin is at least partially retained, or the substrate and the removed sample have a reduced amount of the pathogen or toxin. |
