The invention relates to an apparatus for stacking battery plates comprising a delivery conveyor for supplying battery plates sequentially along a delivery path. The delivery conveyor includes a plurality of spaced apart plate carriers 56 each configured to support at least one battery plate 2 in use, the plate carriers 56 defining a series of gaps 58 between adjacent plate carriers, wherein each gap 58 is larger than the battery plate 2. The apparatus further includes at least one stop mechanism 110, 210, 310, configured to selectively intercept the delivery path at a plurality of indexed stop positions without impeding the delivery conveyor; wherein the stop mechanism 110, 210, 310 intercepts the movement of the battery plates 2 on the delivery conveyor causing the battery plate(s) 2 to move off the respective plate carrier 56 and pass through the subsequent gap 58 of the conveyor. The apparatus also includes plate stacking mechanisms 224, 324 for receiving battery plates as they are moved off the delivery conveyor by the stop mechanism 110, 210, 310. |
