725,337. Ball and socket joints. SELL, A. March 6, 1953 [March 14, 1952 ; Sept. 9, 1952], No. 6333/53. Class 65 (2). [Also in Group XXII] In a ball and socket joint, the housing 1 is formed with a cavity having a portion concentric witl the ball 2 and a cylindrical portion extending from the concentric portion througl the wall of the housing and a seating for the ball is formed by pressing a cylindrical metal cap 3 through the cylindrical extension into contact with the ball, whereby the cap is deformed to occupy the space between the ball and the wall of the concentric portion. The interior surface of the cap, which may be lined with anti-friction material, is provided with slots 5 to assist deformation and to form channels for lubricant. Longitudinal pressure is exerted on the ball stem to create slight play between the ball and its seating, the play being taken up by a compression spring 4 interposed between the ball and the head of the cap. A lubricator 7 is fitted in the latter. As shown, the housing provides the lower part of the seating. In a modification, the ball seats wholly in the cap which extends to the aperture for the ball stem. The slots then meet at their lower ends to form closed reservoirs for lubricant. |
