PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure the startability of an internal combustion engine while suppressing the vibration of the internal combustion engine at a time of start at a low temperature in a hybrid electric vehicle including a variable valve device for changing operation characteristics of an intake valve.SOLUTION: A controller 200 controls a VVL device to set operation characteristics to a second state and a motor generator MG1 to execute cranking when an engine 100 starts if a temperature of an electrical storage device B is lower than a predetermined temperature. The controller 200 controls the VVL device to set the operation characteristic to a first state if a start failure determination condition for determining whether a start failure occurs to the engine 100 is satisfied after starting the cranking.
