A catalyst is prepared by forming into shapes an intimate plastic mixture comprising basic calcium phosphate at least as alkaline as hydroxyapatite, clay, powdered active carbon, and water, and heating the shapes in substantial absence of air to harden them. The shapes may be formed by augur extrusion and are heated at a temperature below that at which the clay vitrifies. A preferred clay is attapulgite. Starch or other carbonizable organic material may be included in the mixture. The calcium phosphate may be formed in situ in the mixture by adding a phosphate to a water suspension of lime, clay, and carbon.
