1. An improved endodontic instrument configured for use in a rotary hand piece and having a working length made of a shape memory material, the improvement comprising:
the working length having a straight non-apical portion and a pre-curved apical portion, the pre-curved apical portion beginning at one-third to one-quarter of the working length as measured from a tip end of the endodontic instrument, the straight non-apical portion having a longitudinal centerline in common with a central longitudinal axis of the endodontic instrument and the pre-curved apical portion having a different longitudinal centerline defined in part by a first radius “R”, the radius R defining a first curvature which offsets a tip end of the endodontic instrument 30-75° relative to the longitudinal centerline of the straight apical portion; the longitudinal centerline of the pre-curved apical portion also having a second curvature lying toward the starting point of the pre-curved apical portion and a third curvature adjacent to the second curvature and lying toward the tip end of endodontic instrument; the second and third curvatures each being on opposite sides of a vertical plane which contains a starting point of the pre-curved apical portion and the tip end of the endodontic instrument, the second and third curvatures each extending away from and then back toward the vertical plane, the second curvature at its peak causing the longitudinal centerline of the pre-curved apical portion to lie a further distance away from the vertical plane than does the third curvature at its peak; wherein the first, second, and third curvatures force the straight non-apical portion into a forced-inside, forced-outside cutting action as the endodontic instrument is rotated within a root canal. |
