FLOW CONTROL WITH BUFFER RECLAMATION

Systems and methods are described herein that include flow control mechanisms that provide a receiving device with the ability to reclaim buffers that have been previously advertised to a sending device. Data structures and communication methods are described that facilitate the communication of flow control messages between sending and receiving devices that allow an advertised window to be reduced, and buffers to be released, by a sending device in response to a flow control message from the receiving device.

1. A non-transitory computer storage medium storing computer-executable instructions comprising instructions for:
by a receiving device, generating a first flow control message that communicates a reduction in a previously advertised number of buffers that can be received from a sending device; transmitting the first flow control message to the sending device; receiving a release notification from the sending device that identifies a number of buffers released by the sending device; and in response to the release notification, reallocating up to the number of released buffers to a different sending device.
