<p>Disclosed is a network device, with forwarding engines being removed from line cards, increasing configuration flexibility of physical interfaces and forwarding engines, and realizing centralized management and scheduling of multiple forwarding engines to avoid inadequate or excess capability of the forwarding engines to improve forwarding performance and reliability of the network device. The network device comprises a plurality of forwarding engines, mappers and line cards, the line cards comprising physical interfaces; according to the relationship between the forwarding engines and physical interfaces, the mapper transmits packets from the line cards to the corresponding forwarding engines, and packets from the forwarding engines to the corresponding physical interfaces.
