A process for reducing iron ore to sponge iron by means of a gaseous reducing agent comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen comprises removing a part of the gases from a zone of a reducing furnace in which there is final reduction of ferrous oxide to iron, separating from these gases the fully oxidised compounds, e.g. steam and carbon dioxide, therein, and re-cycling the remaining hydrogen and carbon monoxide to the reducing furnace. The carbon dioxide and steam are removed by cooling the gases and subjecting them to washing by a substance capable of absorbing the carbon dioxide. Make-up gas is supplied to the re-cycled gas and is produced by a reaction between methane and carbon dioxide, the latter being obtained during the regeneration of the carbon dioxide absorbing liquid. The reducing gas is preheated before being supplied to the reduction zone and part of the gas from this zone is drawn off and cooled before reaching the main blower, by which time it is cold and has had some of the steam removed. It then passes to a series of washers to remove carbon dioxide and the remainder of the steam, and is finally stored in a gas holder with make-up gas. Specification 728,738, [Group XII], is referred to.
|
