Provided is an aromatic ring compound having a glucagon antagonistic action, which is useful for the prophylaxis or treatment of diabetes and the like. A compound represented by the formula (I):;
wherein each symbol is as defined in the DESCRIPTION, or a salt thereof has a superior glucagon antagonistic action, and is useful as a glucagon antagonist, a glucose production inhibitor or an agent for the prophylaxis or treatment of diabetes and the like.

A compound represented by the formula (I): wherein ring A is an optionally further substituted 5- or 6-membered aromatic ring, and the 5- or 6-membered aromatic ring is optionally fused with an optionally substituted 5- to 7-membered ring; ring B is an optionally further substituted 6-membered aromatic ring; R1 is C1-6 alkyl optionally substituted by a halogen atom, or C3-10 cycloalkyl optionally substituted by a halogen atom; R2 is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or C1-6 alkyl optionally substituted by a halogen atom; and X is CH or N, or a salt thereof.
