The invention relates to a method for forming seals on vehicle bodies, in which a sealing material strand (1) to be processed to form a multiplicity of seals (2) is produced by extrusion, the sealing material strand (1) is coiled to form a transportable unit (4), the transportable unit (4) is transported to a processing site, and the sealing material strand (1) is supplied continuously at the processing site using the transportable unit (4) to a processing device (6) which forms the seals (2), wherein, within the scope of the processing, a portion of the sealing material strand (1) to be applied to the relevant seal support seat and forming the seal (2) is severed from the sealing material strand (1) in each case. According to the invention, within the scope of producing the sealing material strand (1), the sealing material strand portions (13) which in each case form a seal are produced with a cross section changing in the longitudinal direction of the strand, and, within the scope of processing the sealing material strand (1), separating points (29, 30; 25) which are required for severing the sealing material strand portions (13) which in each case form a seal (2) are determined by detecting markings (15, 24) which are produced on the sealing material strand (1) before the transportable unit is formed and/or by detecting changes in the cross section of the sealing material strand that occur at certain longitudinal positions of the sealing material strand portions (13). |
