1. A process for the preparation of compounds of formula (I) wherein X is at least one cation, and m and n are independently 1 or 2, said process comprising:
i) sulfonation of hydroquinone of formula (II) in the presence or absence of solvent, to provide a compound of formula (III); ii) treating the compound of formula (III) with a salt of an organic acid in a suitable solvent; andiii) precipitating the product of formula (I).
