摘要
735,646. Nails. ELASTIC STOP NUT CORPORATION. Sept. 5, 1952 [Sept. 15, 1951], No. 22357/52. Class 89(2). [Also in Group XXII] Nails, e.g. those for securing shingles &c. to artificial wall boards of fibrous material or of gypsum &c., and having two adjacent shanks connected by a collapsable head permitting relative movement between the shanks to cause lateral deflection of the less rigid shank to give the necessary holding power, have the more rigid driving shank also weakened at a point intermediate its ends so that, should the point encounter one of the frame members of the building the head portion may continue to be driven without further advance of the point. The nails, that may be made from thin stainless steel strip, have the point of the holding shank 14, Fig. 1, of V-shape, the metal removed from the V forming the point 12 of the driving shank, thus reducing the overall length of the stock required. The holding shank has a comparatively wide punched-up tongue 30 and the driving shank a narrower tongue 26 on the headside of which is a narrow slot 28. Slits 20, 24 at the edges of the shank facilitate the bending of the head from the shank and notches 18 facilitate collapse of the head. The shanks are bent to V-channel section and nest, as shown in Fig. 7, the holding shank being flattened at the edges 34a from the tongue 30 to the point. In the driving position the tongues 26, 30 interengage and when the underside of the head contacts the shingle the holding shank is arrested and further penetration of the driving shank bends the holding shank laterally, as shown in Fig.8, during the flattening of the head. Should, however, the driving point encounter a frame member rendering further penetration difficult, the metal at the sides of the slot 28 collapses, forming wings 28a that provide the holding power. Specification 605,164 is referred to.
