Class 39(3) [Also in Group II] A process for treating the surface-of tubes of ferrous metals by bombardment with ions of carbon, silicon, or hydrogen, with or without an admixture of nitrogen, the ions being produced by glow discharge as claimed in parent Specification, comprises increasing, at least intermittently, the energy in the glow discharge and at the same time dncreasing the dissipation of heat from the tube. The energy may be increased periodically by increasing the pressure or the voltage. As shown, a tube 20 is supported in a jacket 21 having inlet and outlet pipes 27 and 28 for cooling medium. The ends of the tube 20 are covered by domes 29 and 30 and a counter electrode 31 passes through the tube being supported by insulators 32 and 33 in the domes 29, 30. The treatment gas e.g. nitrogen and hydrogen, or ammonia with ur without admixture with hydrogen or nitrogen, is fed into one dome, through the tube, and out of the other dome, A continuous potential of 400 volts may be applied and have superposed at intervals of 3 to 5 seconds impulses lasting one tenth second and of magnitude ten times that of the continuous potential, the coolant surrounding the tube preventing any increase in temperature. It is stated that the process is particularly suitable for treating the barrels of firearms.
