771,248. Sampling paper during manufacture. AUSTRALIAN PAPER MANUFACTURERS, Ltd. June 14, 1954 [June 23, 1953], No. 17437/54. Class 96. In removing a sample piece of paper for testing &c. from a travelling web 17 during manufacture, a cylindrical cutter 9 with a sharpened edge 16 is projected when a disc 12, of paper &c. is ruptured by e.g. 30 to 60 lbs. per sq. in. pressure of compressed air supplied through a valve 4, the speed of projection being high enough to cut the web without tearing it or interfering with its travel. Cushioning material 19 in a box 18 stops the cutter. A film or foil 21 is placed over the mouth of the box if it is necessary to protect the sample from loss of moisture &c. In modifications, the barrel 8 from which the cutter is projected screws into a " pistol " firing blank cartridges; and a bolt and spring may be accommodated in the " pistol " barrel so that the cutter is withdrawn after penetrating the paper, a barb in the cutter withdrawing the sample inside the cutter.
|
