779,121. Vehicle power steering. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 3, 1952 [Oct. 3, 1951; Jan. 3, 1952], No. 24867/52. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXIX] A valve, e.g. for power steering apparatus, comprises a housing 48, Fig. 2, formed with inlet ports 64, outlet ports 66 to opposite ends of a fluid-operated motor and a reservoir port 68, and a closure member 52 slidable in the housing and adapted to interconnect all the ports in its neutral position through annular channels 54, 58, 62 in the housing and 56, 60 in member 52. Pressure chambers 132, 134 at opposite ends of the member 52 communicate with channels 56, 60 via bores 144, 146, respectively, whereby movement of the closure member from neutral establishes different pressures in said chambers, the resultant force of which acts on the housing to move same to follow-up the member 52, arid also reacts on the member to provide " feel " for the operator. In steering apparatus, the closure member is movable by drop arm 26, Fig. 1, from the steering wheel and controls a piston and cylinder motor 30 which moves a tie rod 14 operating the steerable wheels 12 via links 16. The valve housing is fixed to rod 14 so that movement of the rod also, causes the housing to follow-up the closure member. In another arrangement, the chambers 240, 242, Fig. 5, at opposite ends of the closure member are of unequal size, the ratio of the areas of the closure member exposed to the chambers being equal to the ratio of the areas of opposite sides of the piston of motor 30. Specifications 779,122 and 779,123 are referred to.
|
