Method and Apparatus for Reducing Power Consumption in a Mobile Electronic Device

Embodiments of the present invention provide methods and apparatuses for reducing power consumption for a mobile electronic device in order to extend battery life. In an embodiment, the mobile electronic device monitors a power level of the battery in the mobile electronic device, determines that the power level of the battery reaches a predetermined threshold, and based upon the determination, terminates a first launcher currently running on the mobile electronic device and activates a second launcher on the mobile electronic device. By activating the second launcher which has power saving features, the power consumption of the mobile electronic device is reduced and thus the battery life is extended while preserving the basic functions of the mobile device.

1. A method of operating a mobile electronic device, wherein the mobile electronic device comprises a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU), the method comprising:
monitoring, by the mobile electronic device, a power level of a battery powering the mobile electronic device; determining, by the mobile electronic device, that the power level of the battery has reached a battery power level threshold; and upon the determining:
disabling, by the mobile electronic device, one or more first applications on the mobile electronic device, wherein one or more second applications remains enabled;disabling, by the mobile electronic device, display of respective icons for the disabled one or more first applications on a screen of the mobile electronic device when the screen is on; andscaling down a CPU frequency of the CPU and a GPU frequency of the GPU.
