PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid state image pickup device which facilitates reduction in the size and cost of a system, and allows for simultaneous acquisition of the color image and distance information of a subject, and to provide a camera system. ! SOLUTION: A solid state image pickup device has a pixel array and a subject distance detector. The pixel array includes a distance measurement pixel 30. The distance measurement pixel 30 is a pixel for detecting the light intensity required for determining the distance in a subject distance detector. The distance measurement pixel 30 includes a first diffraction grating 41 and a second diffraction grating 42. The first diffraction grating 41 diffracts the light incident to the distance measurement pixel 30. The first diffraction grating 41 is located on the incident side for a photoelectric conversion section 40. The second diffraction grating 42 diffracts the light passed through the first diffraction grating 41. The second diffraction grating 42 is
