The process comprises partly supplying heat on a transition area of a vertical electrode (2) in which an electrode material passes from the state of embers to the solid state, and electrically connecting on an area of the electrode in which the electrode material is in solid form. The vertical electrode comprises a shell containing an electrode material. The electrode material constitutes a block that is in solid form in the lower part of the shell and is formed by curing a granular ember block introduced in the upper part of the shell. In the process: the conditions of thermal coupling of curing plates with electrode vary longitudinally with the electrode; and the conditions of electrical coupling of electrical connection plates with electrode vary longitudinally to the electrode. The step of electrical connection is carried out away from the transition area from ember state to the solid state of electrode material.
