A method of forming a nanostructured material by mixing particles with linkage units in a single phase so that the linkage units can join together particles. The linkage units are then removed in whole or in part to bring the particles into proximity so that an ordered structure is obtained as shown in Figure 6. The nanostructured material that is formed has a more even distribution of particles and increased surface connectivity making these materials particularly suited to applications where the surface are of the material is important
