PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the travel state of a vehicle so that the driver of the vehicle has a less feeling of psychological oppression from peripheral vehicles.SOLUTION: A control part 17 uses a detection part 10 to detect positions of peripheral vehicles traveling nearby the local vehicle on the same lane with the local vehicle and on lanes in the same direction adjoining the same lane. The control part 17 imparts potential fields representing the degrees of feelings of psychological oppression that the driver of the local vehicle has to predetermined areas adjoining the detected positions of the peripheral vehicles so as to generate a potential distribution as a distribution of the potential fields depending upon the respective peripheral vehicles. On the basis of the generated potential distribution, the control part 17 commands a vehicle control part 18 to control the travel state of the local vehicle so that the vehicle travels at a position where a potential field is relatively low.
