The present invention relates to catalysts, to processes for making catalysts and to chemical processes employing such catalysts. The catalysts are preferably used for converting acetic acid to ethanol. The catalyst comprises a precious metal and one or more active metals on a modified support that comprises cobalt.

1. A catalyst comprising a precious metal and one or more active metals on a modified support,
wherein the precious metal is selected from the group consisting of rhodium, rhenium, ruthenium, platinum, palladium, osmium, iridium and gold, wherein the one or more active metals are selected from the group consisting of copper, iron, vanadium, nickel, titanium, zinc, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, tin, lanthanum, cerium, and manganese, provided that the precious metal and the one or more active metals are a metal other than cobalt, wherein the modified support comprises a support material and a support modifier comprising (i)-cobalt and (ii) an oxide of tungsten, molybdenum or vanadium in an amount from 0.1 to 40 wt. %, based on the total weight of the modified support.
