An apparatus for measuring the filter blocking tendency of a diesel fuel comprises a fuel reservoir 1, a pump, a filter 5, means for controlling the temperature 7 of a fuel sample, means for measuring a pressure drop 6 across the filter and a control system 8. A temperature controlled zone 10 may contain a heat exchanger 4 and the filter. The temperature in the sample reservoir may be pre-conditioned and may differ from that in the temperature control zone. The sample may be shaken or stirred 12 automatically prior to testing. The temperature of the sample in the apparatus or the reservoir may be automatically increased or decreased during a test or prior to a test. A cold soak of the sample may be carried out before testing.
