551,459. Rubber compositions. VALKENBURGH, E. A. VAN. Feb. 13, 1941, No. 1995. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1940. [Class 70] A free carboxylic acid, e.g. stearic acid, and the reaction product of a crude composition containing a number of carboxylic acids with an amine or a mixture of amines are incorporated in rubber to be vulcanized or in an aqueous dispersion of rubber to be coagulated and cured or to be converted into sponge rubber by beating to a froth and curing. The crude acid composition is such as is produced in wooldegreasing, in the production of perfumes, the steel rolling mill fatty acid waste, talloil, naval store by-products, cottonseed foots, oxidized petroleum, crude naphthenic acids, crude undecylenic acid, crude sebacic acid, oil or fat residues, crude resin or pine oil distillation acids, or other cheap carboxylic acid mixtures. The by-product mother liquor from the synthesis of urea, containing urea, ammonia, and ammonium carbamate may be used as the source of amines, or ammonia, reduced drip oil, crude o-toluidine, or aniline may be used. The products may be dried on zinc oxide or incorporated in asphalt which are afterwards compounded in rubber.
