It has been established that a strengthening of the effect of memantine takes place when it is combined with melatonin. The invention may be realized through the preparation of a finished pharmaceutical product such as capsules, preferably hard gelatin capsules.

1. A pharmaceutical composition for prophylaxis and treatment of mental, behavioral, and cognitive disorders, comprising:
40.0-90.0 weight % memantine; 2.0-5.0 weight % melatonin; 2.0-50.0 weight % diluent, wherein at least one diluents is selected from a group consisting of: lactose, starch, starch derivative, microcrystalline cellulose, sucrose, inverted sugar, decstrose and decstrate; 3.5-10.0 weight % binding agent; wherein at least one binding agent is selected from a group consisting of: polyvinylpyrrolidon, gelatin, cellulose derivatives, natural gums, polyethylene glycols, and sodium alginate; 1.5-10.0 weight % disintegrating agent, wherein at least one disintegrating agent is selected from a group consisting of: sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, cross-carmellose, and jellied starch; and 0.2-3.0 weight % antifriction agent, wherein at least one antifriction agent is selected from a group consisting of: stearic acid a salt of stearic acid, colloid silicon dioxide, talc, sodium benzoate, sodium acetate, and sodium oleate.
