The present invention provides a negative electrode active material for a rechargeable lithium battery, comprising a core and a shell layer located on surfaces of the core. The core comprises: a first complex particle in which silicon particles and carbon particles are combined by amorphous carbon; fine graphite particles in which the average grain diameter (D50) is less than or equal to 2 μm; and a first amorphous carbon. The shell layer comprises: a second complex particle in which silicon particles and carbon particles are combined by amorphous carbon; scale like graphite fragments in which the average grain diameter (D50) is more than 2 μm; and a second amorphous carbon. Also, the present invention provides a method for preparing the same, and the rechargeable lithium battery including the same.
