PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of making the optimum use of exhaust gas return for reducing a fuel consumption rate.SOLUTION: In a method according to the present invention, there is controlled the exhaust gas return rate in the exhaust gas return passage (19) of an automobile having an internal combustion engine (16). There is given in advance the set value of the ignition delay of the internal combustion engine (16), to which the exhaust gas return rate is fitted. At an operation point desired for the exhaust gas return, an exhaust gas return valve (21) and/or a baffle (12) arranged in the downstream part of an air filter (11) of the automobile or in an exhaust gas system of the automobile are set at an opening according to the operation point.
