The present invention provides a method for estimating the life of an organic EL element provided with a pair of electrodes and an organic layer disposed between the pair of electrodes, the method involving: a data acquisition step for acquiring temporal change data of the element properties of the organic EL element when the applied current density to the organic EL element and/or the atmosphere temperature of the organic EL element was changed; a parameter extraction step for obtaining a fitting function of the temporal change data and for extracting temporal change parameters, which characterize the temporal change of the element properties at the applied current density and/or the atmosphere temperature, from the fitting function; an estimation formula setting step for calculating the temperature dependency of the temporal change parameters by using the temperature increase value of the organic layer during light emission at the applied current density and/or atmosphere temperature, and for setting a life estimation formula for the organic EL element; and a life estimation step for estimating the life of the organic EL element by using the life estimation formula.
