A display device and an operating method thereof are provided. In the operating method of a display device, an input image is received externally. A first type signal of the input image is converted into a second type signal. A brightness component is extracted from the converted second type signal. Document image determination information is extracted based on the extracted brightness component and whether the input image to the display device is a document image is determined.

1. A method of controlling a display device, the method comprising:
receiving, via a receiving unit of the display device, an input image externally; converting, via a signal converting unit of the display device, a first type signal of the input image into a second type signal; extracting, via a control unit of the display device, a brightness component from the converted second type signal; and extracting, via the control unit, document image determination information based on the extracted brightness component; and determining, via the control unit, whether the input image to the display device is a document image.
