<PICT:0830805/IV (a)/1> The "rod-like" fibrous product of the parent Specification (according to which a solution of a filament-forming substance is extruded through a large number of closely-spaced orifices distributed over the whole of a circular area into a coagulating liquid and the mass of filaments so formed is withdrawn at a take-up speed which is less than half the extrusion speed) is smoothed and compacted by rolling between two surfaces. The material may be rolled continuously with its production or may be first cut into short pieces. The space between the rolling surfaces may diminish in the direction of travel of the material. As shown, short pieces 9 of the material are fed from a plane 8 between the surfaces 2 and 6 provided by a concave member and a rotating cylinder respectively, the axis of the cylinder being located so that the space between the surfaces diminishes towards the discharge shoot 10. One or both surfaces may be heated and the material may be surface-treated with a solvent, or the surfaces may be wetted with water. Alternative forms of apparatus having planar or spiral surfaces or reciprocating surfaces, e.g. a pair of metal bands between which the material passes longitudinally, are described.
