The present invention relates to a waste collection system and method, and more specifically, to a waste collection system and method which use an electronic tag and wireless communication to calculate the weight of waste discarded by a user and charge a fee for the weight. The waste collection system according to the present invention comprises: a waste collection device having an electronic tag attached thereon to calculate the weight of waste discarded by a user to transmit the weight via a wireless communication network; a user terminal capable of wirelessly communicating with the electronic tag to acquire tag information by tagging the electronic tag and generate user information including the tag information; a main server to receive the user information from the user terminal to charge a fee corresponding to the weight of the waste discarded by the user transmitted from the waste collection device; and a telecommunications company server to collect waste collection information from the user terminal and the main server to statistically analyze the waste collection information. The waste collection system according to the present invention uses a user terminal such as a smartphone, which most family members carry to identify a user. Therefore, a user does not need to carry an extra identification card, and waste collection and processing efficiency can be improved by statistically processing the waste collection information.
