A sampling head 1 for use with a filtration unit 2, the sampling head comprising a body 20 containing a duct 21 extending from a sampling end 22 to a coupling end 23 which is adapted for fluid-tight wedging connection with the filtration unit 2, wherein the sampling end has an inlet opening 26 that communicates with the duct, and projecting spacer ribs 29 and 30 disposed on opposite sides of a flat surface containing the inlet opening 26. The spacer ribs distance the inlet from the sampling surface. The filtration unit comprises a closed container 3 with a bottom portion 4, an inlet port 6 for introduction of a fluid sample, a top portion 10, outlet port 12 for removal of filtrate, and a filtration layer 14 to collect solids present in a sample of fluid passing through the container. The sample head body further comprises diverging surfaces 31 and 32 on opposite sides of the ribs which enable the head to be used on a flat or curved surface. In use, negative pressure is applied to the filtration unit and the sampling unit is moved or swept across a sampling surface. |
