摘要 <p>An engine valve deactivation system for an engine 6 having two or more cylinders C1, C2, C3, each cylinder having two exhaust valves and two inlet valves, at least one cylinder being deactivatable, wherein each deactivatable cylinder has one inlet valve selectively deactivated by means of a first supply of pressurised fluid, and both exhaust valves and the other of the inlet valves selectively deactivated by means of a second supply of pressurised fluid. Preferably two devices, S3, D3, for example hydraulic lash adjusters or roller finger followers, each controlled by an electronically controlled valve, 15, 16, selectively deactivate the first inlet valve and the other inlet valve and both exhaust valves respectively, the first device activated when increased swirl is required in the respective cylinder and both devices activated when complete deactivation of the respective cylinder is required. Also claimed is a motor vehicle having an engine comprising the valve deactivation system. The system improves fuel efficiency and economy.</p>
