Process for the production of 4 chlor-2 aminotoluene

A process for the manufacture of 4-chloro-2-nitro-toluene comprises the diazotisation and subsequent treatment by the Sandmeyer reaction of 4-amino-2-nitrotoluene obtained by the nitration of p-toluidine in cold sulphuric acid. In an example p-toluidine is nitrated with nitric acid in sulphuric acid to give 4-amino-2-nitro-toluene which is diazotised with nitrous acid and the diazonium salt poured into an aqueous solution of cuprous chloride and hydrochloric acid to give 4-chloro-2-nitro-toluene. Reduction of this compound with formic acid and iron chips gives 4-chloro-2-amino-toluene.
