The present disclosure relates to a method of echo cancelling from a received signal in a communication system. In one embodiment, at least a near end speech signal is compressed by a compressor. The compressed near end signal is processed by an Adaptive filter to generate a simulated echo signal based on one or more predetermined variable adaptive coefficients which is further decompressed by a decompressor. The decompressed echo signal is then subtracted from the decompressed received far end speech signal to obtain a residual error signal. The residual error signal is processed by a non-linear processor based on a status signal to generate an output signal with the echo being removed. Companding of signals in the adaptive filter path improves the convergence rate and also reduces the distortion due to incomplete cancellation of echo in the final output. FIG. 6
