PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device that less likely causes display failure and reduction in a voltage retention rate even when an alignment layer is not formed.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates in which an outermost surface is not substantially composed of an alignment layer, a liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal material and held between the pair of substrates, and a polymer layer formed on a surface of at least one substrate of the pair of substrates and controlling alignment of liquid crystal molecules. The polymer layer is formed by polymerizing two or more radically polymerizable monomers added to the liquid crystal layer; and at least one of radically polymerizable monomers is a compound having a structure that generates a ketyl radical by irradiation with light through hydrogen withdrawing reaction. |
