The invention essentially relates to a starter (1) for a heat engine of a motor vehicle comprising a drive pinion (13) which is movable in translation on a drive shaft (15), and a contactor controlling the movement of the drive pinion via a control lever (27), the contactor comprising a spring (291) called a tooth-against-tooth spring. A coupling system (30) comprising a stack of friction disks is installed between the drive pinion (13) and the drive shaft (15). A stop (51), against which the drive pinion (13) bears, is positioned so that, when the drive pinion (13) comes into contact with the stop (51), the tooth-against-tooth spring (291) is compressed relative to the initial compression status thereof so that a force is exerted in the direction of the drive pinion (13) to facilitate an activation of the coupling system.
