A cyclonic or centrifugal separator 1 for separating particulate matter from a diesel engine exhaust or for separating air from flowing liquids. The flow enters the separator peripherally near the top and particulate matter falls to the bottom 4 where it is collected in a receiving receptacle 5. The air exits the separator from the opposite end 2 to the particulate matter, where a de-rotating volute 3 is attached. The volute may have rotors that are connected to a motor/dynamo (10, Fig 2) in order to drive/be driven by the flow through the separator depending on the rate of flow. The receiving receptacles (15, Fig 3) at the base of the separator may also have one or more volutes (16, Fig 3) attached which may have non-return venting outlets (18, Fig 3). The parts of the device may have non-stick internal surfaces and may be thermally insulated and/or trace heated. Furthermore the volutes may be vibrated by the engine during idle or by electric, electronic or ultra-sonic means when cold. |
