Chloroprene is obtained by dehydrochlorinating 3,4-dichlorbutene-1 with aqueous alkali in the presence of a substantially inert waterimmiscible liquid organic compound boiling above the boiling point of 1-chlorbutadiene (68 DEG C.), and separating by distillation an overhead fraction containing chloroprene substantially free from 1-chlorbutadiene. Suitable organic liquids include inert aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons and also chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dichlorbutanes which react slowly with the aqueous alkali.
