The isomerisation of C4-C9 paraffins is effected at 500-800 DEG F. and superatmospheric pressure in the vapour phase in the presence of free hydrogen, 1-25% by weight based on feed of a hydrogen halide (of which the halogen has an atomic weight between 35 and 85) and a catalyst containing 0,01-2% of a platinum group metal and 3-20 DEG of boria supported on alumina. Aromatic and naphthalenic hydrocarbons may be present. The pressure may be 200-1000 p.s.i.g, the space velocity 0,25-8 wt./wt./hr. and the hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol ratio 0,01-20:1. The hydrogen halide may be added as a hydrogen halide precursor and may be added at least partly by hydrogen halide present in the recycle gas. |
