The present invention is a method for manufacturing 3-hydroxybutyric acid or a salt thereof using halophilic bacteria belonging to the genus Halomonas and the purpose is to derive a means for degrading PHB accumulated in said bacterial cells to cause secreted production of 3-hydroxybutyric acid into the culture solution with high efficiency and collecting the 3-hydroxybutyric acid from the culture solution. A method for manufacturing 3-hydroxybutyric acid or a salt thereof is characterized in that a halophilic bacterium belonging to the genus Halomonas is cultured under specified conditions.
