PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inducing pluripotency or improving efficiency of induction of pluripotency in cells.SOLUTION: The present invention describes a method for inducing or maintaining pluripotency in a cell by contacting the cell with a biological or chemical species that increases MUC1activity. The biological species is a gene or protein, and the protein is a MUC1ligand and is an antibody that recognizes the PSMGFR sequence of MUC1. The chemical species is a small molecule, which is a phorbol ester enhancing the transcription of MUC1, its cleavage enzyme, or NM23.
