PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection optical system which is compact and has excellent imaging performance over the whole screen without using a free-form surface lens or a free-form surface mirror.SOLUTION: A projection optical system for enlarging and projecting an image displayed on an image display element, onto a screen as an enlarged image, includes, in order from a reduction side to an enlargement side, a dioptric system 2 and a catoptric system 3. The dioptric system 2 has an aperture stop ST. At least one meniscus lens in which the curvature radius of an incident side surface and the curvature radius of an emission side surface are substantially equal to each other, is provided on at least one of the reduction side and the enlargement side of the aperture stop ST in the dioptric system 2. |
