A glass fibre treating composition comprises an aqueous emulsion containing (a) 4-25% of an unsaturated oil-modified polyester, (b) 0,1-1% of a surface-active emulsifying agent which is a fatty acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol, or a condensate of an alkylene oxide with a phenol or an alkylphenol, (c) 0,1-2% of an anti-static agent which is a fatty acid amine or amide or their water-soluble salts, a cationic amine or amide compound or a quarternary ammonium compound having alkyl group at least one of which has more than 8 carbon atoms, and possibly, (d) 0,1-2% of a humectant which is sorbitan monooleate, sorbitan mono-stearate, sorbitan monopalmitate or their polyoxyethylene derivatives. Examples describe aqueous emulsions containing (1) a soyabean oil modified phthalic acid-glycol polyester, a condensate of phenol and ethylene oxide, dicocodimethyl ammonium chloride and sorbitan mono-oleate; (2) A linseed oil modified phthalic acid-glycol polyester, polyethylene glycol stearate and trimethyl octadecyl ammonium chloride; (3) A perilla oil modified sebacic aciddiethylene glycol polyester, a condensate of phenol and ethylene oxide, stearamide and sorbit in mono-palmitate. Specifications 750,135 and 755,957 are referred to.ALSO:Glass fibres are sized by treating them with an aqueous emulsion containing (a) 4%-25% of an unsaturated oil-modified polyester, (b) 0.1%-1% of a surface-active emulsifying agent which is a fatty acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol, or a condensate of an alkylene oxide with a phenol or an alkyl phenol, (c) 0.1%-2% of an anti-static agent which is a fatty acid amine or amide or a water-soluble salt thereof, a cationic amine or amide compound or a quaternary ammonium compound having alkyl groups, at least one of which has more than 8 carbon atoms, and possibly, (d) 0.1%-2% of a humectant which is sorbitan mono-oleate, sorbitan mono-stearate, sorbitan mono-palmitate or their polyoxyethylene derivatives. Sized glass fibre yarns are made by producing glass fibres, gathering them into a sliver, treating the fibres and/or the sliver with the above emulsion, drafting the sliver endwise, twisting and plying the sliver to form a yarn and heating the yarn to cure the composition. In examples glass fibres are treated with aqueous emulsions comprising (1) a soyabean oil modified phthalic acid-glycol polyester, a condensate of phenol and ethylene oxide, dicocodimethyl ammonium chloride and sorbitan mono-oleate; (2) a linseed oil modified phthalic acid-glycol polyester, polyethylene glycol stearate and trimethyl octadecyl ammonium chloride; (3) a perilla oil modified sebacic acid-diethylene glycol polyester, a condensate of phenol and ethylene oxide and sorbitan mono-palmitate. Specifications 750,135 and 755,957 are referred to. |
