A method for the polymerisation of a vinyl ester

A vinyl ester is polymerized in a medium comprising a carboxylic acid anhydride having a dipole moment above 2,5. The anhydride may be acetic anhydride, the catalyst may be azo-bis-isobutyronitrile and the vinyl ester may be vinyl acetate or butyrate. The polyvinyl ester may be hydrolized to polyvinyl alcohol using methanolic alkali.
