A process of strengthening magnesia at high temperatures, comprises mixing together from 20 to 80% by weight each of two different magnesias to form a mixture containing 90% or more by weight of MgO and from 0.8 to 3% by weight of SiO2, one of said magnesias having lime and silica in a ratio by weight of one or less and having a mineralogical component of calcium magnesium silicate and the other of said magnesias having more than 2% by weight of ferric oxide, having lime and silica as impurities in a ratio by weight of more than 2, and having 2% or more by weight of dicalcium ferrite present as component, and heating the mixture of said magnesias to a temperature in the range between 1000 DEG and 1700 DEG C. Calcined alumina or chromic oxide may also be added in an amount of 1-10% by weight of the total mix.
|
