The contact-breaker arm of an I.C. engine ignition system is rotatably mounted on a pivot pin 25 comprising the cylindrical head of a bolt serving also to clamp a contact support 17 to a flat backing member 11. The breaker arm 22 is rocked by a cam 12 to open contacts 20, 21 mounted respectively on the support 17 and the arm 22, the contacts being biased into engagement by leaf springs 50, 51. Adjustment of the fixed contact 20 is carried out with a blade 59 inserted between two stops 57 on the member 11 and a recess 55 in the support 17. After slackening the bolt 25, the support 17 can be rotated by twisting the blade 59 ; when the desired contact separation is reached bolt 25 is tightened, holding support 17 firmly in place with blade 59. Current to contact 21 flows through the spring 50 which is connected to a terminal plate 49 attached to but insulated from the support 17. The arm 22 is also insulated from the support 17 by a sleeve 34. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the contacts 20, 21 are removable from the support 17 and arm 22 respectively.</p> |
